| Baking pays dividends on the West Rand |
|
Over the past 26 years shoppers at Westgate Shopping Centre have enjoyed the freshly baked delicacies and cakes sold at its home industry store, Altefyn. The retailer is the longest standing business operating from the super regional shopping centre and its founder Estelle Hutchinson still plays an active role in the day-to-day operations of the business.
Established in the early eighties before the shopping mall culture became the norm, Estelle says they took a bit of a risk in relocating Altefyn to Westgate. Westgate was the second “gate” after Eastgate to open in Johannesburg.
“In 1985 a shopping centre was a new phenomenon to us. Back then it was seen as a bold move, however in hindsight, it was good for the business and 26 years later we’re still going strong!.”
Estelle says, “We believe in the quality of our products which have a shelf life of three days, good packaging is also very important as is the whole presentation of the products sold.”
“Our loyal customer base, some who have been supporting us since we opened our doors, know they are purchasing fresh home baked products with a money back guarantee.”
When asked who the oldest and longest running retailer in Westgate is, Estelle laughs, saying she is, “This is one of the reasons I started Altefyn. I love baking so I turned my passion into a successful business and have never looked back.”
Recently the shop started hosting a Pensioners Morning every Tuesday between 09h30 and 11h30. Pensioners can pop into the shop and enjoy a glass of juice or a cup of tea with a sandwich or biscuit for free.
“I believe what you sow you is what you reap and I felt it was high time pensioners could come to Westgate and enjoy a refreshment with us at our expense. This event started three months ago and is proving extremely popular. It is our way of giving back to those we feel need and appreciate such a gesture.”
Altefyn is located near the Woolworths entrance at Westgate Shopping Centre.

Rosy Basson is a spritely, young at heart 82 year old who has spent every weekday over the past ten years at the Westgate super-regional shopping centre. No, her favourite movie is not Mallrats* and she definitely does not classify herself as one either!
“I stay at a retirement village and if I had to stay at home all day by myself it would drive me dilly,” she says, “so I ride on the same bus at the same time every weekday morning and go through to my favourite shopping centre. It is a routine I have been doing for over ten years. Once at Westgate I either go to Maxi’s or the Spur for brunch. They all know me and always make me feel right at home. Thereafter I go about my daily shopping routine as well as talk to the shop owners I have befriended over the years.”
Rosy says she likes everything about Westgate and has no problems with walking from one side of the centre to the other on a regular basis. Walking the length of Westgate is a good kilometre and Rosy says she enjoys her regular walk around the shopping centre.
“I enjoy visiting Westgate because I like the energy and atmosphere there. It’s like my second home. I feel safe and secure there and at my age it is a great place to feel like an active member of society.”

Puzey bikes of all ranges were displayed for public affection and purchase at our Woolworths Court. Our shoppers were jubilant for this display as we also had a competition where two shoppers will win a Puzey bike worth around R6000.
Shoppers took pictures on the Puzey bikes and uploaded the pictures on our facebook page where the winners with amazing pictures will be chosen.

Father’s Day was a blast at Westgate and 100 daddies were spoilt with a Westgate gift card loaded with R50 just for being a dad and shopping at Westgate on Father’s Day.
Daddies were in high spirits because of the gift given to them in celebration of Father’s Day courtesy of Westgate.

| Westgate turned into "Spagate" on Mother’s day 2011... |
|
Mother’s Day was celebrated in “Spagate” style at Westgate from the 7th to 8th May 2011 as the Centre turned into a Spa by displaying and offering Spa treatments. Mommies were pampered exclusively by Mangwanani Spa with leg, hand and neck massages free of charge. Beauty schools such as Face2Face and Nail City were invited to showcase their study offerings and do their practicals at the Centre.
Treatments including nail and hair analysis, foundation tests, eyebrow shaping plus tips and trends in the beauty industry were freely shared with mommies. Red Westgate branded keyrings were freely awarded to mommies throughout the Centre by Miss Roodepoort 2010-Taylor, Miss West Rand 2010-Kim and Miss Teen Roodepoort Gomolemo to celebrate Mother’s Day.

Featuring a selection of Potter's best short stories, Peter rabbit and Friends was an entertaining medley of animal tales full of humour, traditional rhymes and riddles.
Parents brought their little ones for hugs with the Easter bunny and his animated entourage of clowns, balloon sculptors, fairies, face painters and much more at Westgate’s Easter playhouse. The Easter bunny also delighted our host of children coming from the Tshepang Home for Vulnerable Children, in Princess Crossing.
